I have thirty years experience as a Partner in an eight doctor fully computerised former fundholding teaching practice in Watford, caring for 12000 patients from modern purpose built premises. I undertook my full share of out of hours responsibility (on a rota with two other practices) for 16 years, and then worked with the local out of hours provider doing shifts at a Primary Care Centre. I stopped doing out of hours care in October 2004 having done so for over twenty years, and stood down as Senior Partner in the Practice in November 2014 although I remain doing sessional work in General Practice at my old practice and others.
Following my training at Guys Hospital Medical School, and house jobs at Hillingdon Hospital (medical) and Wycombe General Hospital (surgical) I undertook a six month post in Accident and Emergency at Hillingdon Hospital followed by a two year General Surgical and Orthopaedics rotation as a Senior House Officer in the Medway Hospital Group in Kent.
In February 1981 I commenced a three year vocational training scheme based at Watford, involving six month Senior House Officer Posts in each of Medicine/Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a year as a General Practice Registrar, following which I was appointed to my present partnership
I am a principal (performer – though I hate that term) on the Hertfordshire Health Authority list of General Practitioners, and I am on the Child Health Surveillance Register, the Minor Surgery Register, the Obstetric list and the Family Planning list for Hertfordshire Health Authority.
I was an approved General Practice Trainer from February 1989 to July 1999, during which time I trained nine Registrars. Two of the other partners in the practice are or have been G.P. trainers and one is an Associate Trainer. Whilst I have passed on the mantle of one to one training there are still Registrars in training at the practice, as well as Foundation Year Two students and medical students on attachment from University College Hospital, Kings, Guys and St Thomas’s Hospitals plus on occasions Physician Assistants in training.
After stopping being a GP Trainer I continued in an educational role and was GP Tutor to Watford Postgraduate Medical Centre and Watford and Three Rivers Primary Care Trust for four years until 31 March 2005, as well as being an Appraiser to Watford and Three Rivers and Hertsmere PCTs. Following that I was a Senior Clinical Fellow at Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School, University of Hertfordshire for four years with responsibility for the pilot Physicians Assistant MSc Programme (the National Practitioners Programme for Physicians Assistants at the University of Hertfordshire) .
As part of my practice role I was company Medical Officer to D.D.D. Ltd, a manufacturer of ethical pharmaceuticals, a Medical Officer to Watford Football Club and a former Medical Officer to Saracens Rugby Union Club with particular responsibility for crowd safety.
I was a County Medical Officer to St John Ambulance Hertfordshire for 9 years and in this role worked on a number of major events including Knebworth Concerts (Robbie Williams, Metallica, Iron Maiden), the London Marathon, the Royal Parks Marathon and the All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon. I was Regional Clinical Manager to St John Ambulance East of England Region for four years until December 2016.
I was Provost of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners until 2013 and have represented the Faculty on the United Kingdom Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
I am Fellow of both the Academy of Experts and of the Expert Witness Institute.
I have acted as an external assessor for complaints in General Practice to Her Majesty’s Parliamentary Ombudsman as well as an expert witness to the General Medical Council, the Police and several of Her Majesty’s Coroners.
I have provided medicolegal opinions in excess of 4000 cases in the last twenty five years, acting for defendants, claimants, on occasions for the Court as a jointly instructed expert. This has on occasion involved giving evidence in Court and being cross-examined.
